If you're familiar with Zoom, you're likely also familiar with troubleshooting problems with your Zoom video. We've all seen it--someone's picture starts to lag (or completely freeze) even though the audio is crystal clear. Why does that happen, and how can we prevent it? Keep reading for our top tips on how to fix your Zoom video.
1) Check Your Internet Speed
One of the most common causes of Zoom lag is insufficient Internet speed. While Zoom only requires 1.5Mbps and recommends 5Mbps, we suggest using at least 20Mbps for the highest-quality results. It's important to consider that the more participants there are in a call, the more likely it is for everyone to experience delays. Giving your bandwidth a little wiggle room will help cut down on any lagging or frozen Zoom video coming from your connection. People tend to focus on download speeds (think multiple people watching Netflix on the same Internet connection). However, with Zoom, your upload speed is more important. Some Internet providers have high download speeds but very slow upload speeds--make sure your upload speeds can measure up. Run a free speed test here.
2) Check Your CPU and RAM
As your computer's processor, the CPU is the most integral part of its performance and functioning. It's essentially the computer's brain. Apps and programs running in the background expend processing power, meaning fewer resources are free to be allocated to Zoom. Make sure to close out of any other programs that are open on your computer, as they are likely slowing down speed. That includes your Internet browser with all those tabs open! Zoom suggests a Quad-Core processor if you are doing screenshares or other extensive work. The app also recommends users have a minimum of 4gb of RAM (memory, not storage) and 16gb for optimal performance.
3) Update Your Software
This may seem like an obvious one, but out-of-date software tends to run slow and buggy. After confirming that you Zoom app is up to date, check on the update status of the supplemental software that affects your Zoom video. This includes your operating system, computer drivers, and Internet browser. We recommend using the Desktop app of Zoom, as it typically runs more smoothly than your Internet browser. To check if your Zoom app is up to date, select your profile picture in the top right corner and click "check for updates." Zoom will prompt you to download and install any available updates.
