August 15th is #NationalRelaxationDay, and we will be celebrating by watching some of our favorite cozy films. When we really need to wind down and relax, we go straight for our comfort movies--the ones that whisk us away to another time or place where commonplace things become fantastical and whimsical. Kick back, relax, and celebrate National Relaxation Day with these colorful, cozy movies to stream.
1) The Princess Bride (1987)
Available on Disney+
This film is an absolute must-have for a cozy film watchlist. Because what's cozier than being sick in bed and having your grandfather read you a story about true love? NOTHING! The Princess Bride is the fantastical tale told by a young boy's grandfather in hopes to cheer him up. Robin Wright and Cary Elwes give charming, captivating performances as young star-crossed lovers embarking on an incredible journey. What really makes this movie for us are the set, wardrobe, and score. The film's atmosphere is so complete that viewers can't help but be pulled into the fairytale itself. With delicate sword fights and daring battles of wits, this film takes you through the hero's journey while remaining grounded in warmth and whimsy.
2) Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Available to rent on Amazon or AppleTV
Honestly, nearly all of Wes Anderson's films could be considered cozy. We're picking Grand Budapest Hotel for the watchlist because it's our personal favorite. Similar to that of The Princess Bride, the plot of Anderson's movie is relayed in the telling of the story. So while it contains the framing of a murder, a quest for priceless art, and an impending fascist regime, we would still ultimately classify it as a relaxing watch. The bright colors, beautiful costumes, and perfectly symmetrical framing make the film visually soothing. We also feel that the sense of nostalgia Anderson evokes through his whimsical storytelling and meticulous cinematography creates a comforting atmosphere.
3) Any Movie by Hayao Miyazaki
Many available on HBO Max
When we think cozy, we think Miyazaki. Every film is delicately made and visually stunning. Breathtaking visuals are accompanied by calming scores to pull viewers into a new, more beautiful world. If that isn't good enough, we love that many of Miyazaki's films feature young girls as the protagonists. Despite stereotypes, these leading characters form their own stories and control their own destinies. These girls are not waiting around for Prince Charming. Instead, each of Miyazaki's young protagonists makes the world around her much better than the way she found it. We would truly suggest any of his films to watch, but our favorites include Spirited Away (2001), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), and My Neighbor Totoro (1988).
